dieting. This is when the term “yo yo dieting” comes into play. Even though a person may lose weight after beginning a diet, they will have to work hard to keep up and maintain the progress. Yo yo dieting is also seen in individuals who are obese.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Those who are obese have more fat cells than a person who is physically fit. Their fat cells are also larger. When an obese man or woman diets, their fat cells do not decrease in numbers, they only grow smaller. This means that when food intake increases after a diet, the fat cells will return to their original state, making the overall appearance of the individual larger. This is why it is important for a person to find a diet that they will be able to stick to; they will be able to feel better and maintain their weight loss better.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Although the trend of dieting has been mostly associated with women; men also experience these ups and downs of yo yo dieting. During short-term dieting, a dieter must exercise or else half or more of the weight they lose will be due to a loss in muscles. Muscle loss will lead to a variety of problems, such as a thinner, weaken body prone to breakdowns and fatigue; weakened maintenance of weight because it is muscle than burns calories, not fat; and when weight is gained back, it is mostly fat that will stick to the body- exercise is needed to build muscles.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Another result of yo yo dieting is when the weight is gained back, a dieter who does not exercise will not only be fatter, but will appear thicker than they were before. For example, let’s say a man weighed 300 pounds and wore a 5x shirt. He diets without exercising, then loses 20 pounds. Now, let’s say that he regains the weight, but now he is puzzled as to why he now has to fit into a size 6x shirt. The reason is that fat is lighter and less dense than muscle, so it takes more fat weight, as well as bulk, to replace the lost muscle weight. Exercise can eliminate some of these problems.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Not only is yo yo dieting a frustrating process, but it is not good for your overall health. When a person bounces from weight gain to weight loss and back to weight gain again, the immune system suffers. Studies have shown that negative health effects of yo-yo dieting can still be detected years after the fact. If a man participates in crash dieting, such as trying to lose ten pounds in ten days, they will most likely suffer from a yo yo dieting trend. If they are trying to maintain a healthy weight, they should choose a diet that promotes a healthy diet over longer periods of time. The diet should be a complete lifestyle change and not something to try for one brief moment. Food restriction causes binging. Healthy people do not willingly leave the table hungry or go to bed hungry. Studies on rats show that each time that they regain fat, they do so at a faster rate.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Research at the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas shows that men who are always dieting are more likely to suffer heart attacks, high blood pressure and diabetes. Other studies support this finding. Every time that you gain weight rapidly, your liver makes extra fat that blocks and stiffens arteries to cause heart attacks and high blood pressure. Losing weight rapidly increases your chances of forming gall stones. Your liver removes breakdown products of metabolism from your bloodstream and converts them to bile which is stored in your gall bladder. Bile contains cholesterol that forms gall stones, and bile acids that keep the cholesterol soluble to prevent stones from forming. Bile acids are made from food. Restricting food prevents your liver from making bile acids, causing cholesterol to form stones.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Research from Indiana University School of Medicine shows that yoyoing could also cause an existing uterine, breast or prostate cancer to spread. Dr. Robert Bigsby injected three estrogen-like hormones into mice for three straight days: beta-hexachlorocyclohexane, an estrogen form stored in fat; DDT, the estrogen insecticide form stored in fat; and beta-HCH, the estrogen form from the insecticide Lindane. All three estrogens stimulated the inner lining of the uterus to grow. Much of the estrogen was stored in the body as fat. When an animal is put on a fast, fat breaks down and releases estrogen into the bloodstream. When the mice fasted, DDT stayed in the fat, but the compound that came from the insecticide, Lindane, was released from the fat into the bloodstream, causing the uterus to enlarge. Foods that are low in fat do not necessarily contain less calories. These foods can be high in sugar. We all can put it off until tomorrow. However, change begins in the present.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There are a lot of articles and books written on the topic of dieting. Here we will give you some basic tips to give you a head start. We can call these the ABCs of dieting. If these tips are followed the roadway to success will be paved with more than good intentions.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The ABCs are easy to remember and yet these are topics we all know already. The secret is to DO these. The difference from success or failure is a two-letter word, DO.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The other important factor in these ABCs is REDO. If we fail, no, WHEN we fail we need to REDO. We will all fail from time to time. It is then that we need to remember to REDO. Start again. Move forward and let go of the past.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;ABCs&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Add Fiber – Roughage is very important. This is sometimes also called fiber. We don’t have to eat cups of bran cereal that taste like cardboard. We can eat vegetables. The best kind is fresh, the next best is frozen, and the least best is canned. However, if you cannot get the fresh, do the frozen. If the frozen does not work for you, get canned vegetables. The important thing to do is to eat vegetables. Many vegetables contain sulforaphane, which are known to be anti-cancer ingredients (Kendal-Reed. Alive.Com, 2006).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Fiber does not add nutrition but it does add health. Roughage aids in the proper working of the intestinal tract. This assures that the body does not hold on to the food for too long. The longer the body takes to process the food the more calories it absorbs. This is why elimination is so vitally important.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Rebecca Webber, (Prevention, August 2006) suggest 4 grams of fiber per meal and per snack. She cites a recent Tufts University study, which documented that the women who ate “13 grams of fiber or less per day were five times as likely to be overweight as those who ate more fiber” (Webber, 2006).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Be Active – Stay active as much as possible. We are so accustomed to the easy life, from the remote control to the riding lawn mower. We can make some simple changes to add a few more steps each day. Getting up to change the channel on the TV probably won’t work because most of us would not know where or how to change the channel without the remote control. However, there are other steps we can take. We can park at the bank and go inside instead of going through the drive through. We can take the stairs and not the elevator. We can take a walk after dinner instead of watching the extra TV show. Don’t look for the closest parking space but rather take the extra steps. Rebecca Webber cited a “University of South Carolina study of 109 people revealed that those who took 5,000 steps per day were heavier than those who typically took more than 9,000 steps” (Prevention, August 2006). Extra steps make a difference.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Limit your work. For many of us it is very easy to continue working because the work is always there. We must make a commitment to ourselves to put ourselves first. For those of us who are workaholics, this is a hard one to control. However, it is too easy to do less when we work so long that we have nothing left after work. That is why we do not take that evening walk. That is why we do not go to visit friends or go do that errand after work. When we work too long it is too easy to be sedentary all evening.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Control – Stay in control. This is an unusual tip. One not voiced by many. Get in a habit of saying NO. Say NO to the extra TV shows, and instead go to bed early. Getting plenty of sleep is important to weight loss. Say NO to sugars. When we have a choice of cake or fruit for desert, choose the fruit. Even if the fruit was packed in syrup it is better than the cake inundated with sugar and starches. Say NO to fat. When we have a choice of baked potatoes or French fries, choose the baked potato.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;What is amazing about this control factor is that the more we say NO the easier it is. Therefore, we suggest you say NO to things that you do not care about but make a mental note that you said NO. This is practice for the NO that will come later that will be difficult. The more we say NO the more normal it will be for us to say NO in difficult situations. Remember this, compromise starts when a NO is replaced with “Oh Well, it’s just….”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Sean Hyson in Men’s Fitness Magazine (Dec/2006 - Jan/2007) relates the efforts of a mechanical engineer, Mike Ogorek, who got mad enough to do something. Mike went from 333 pounds in 2001 to 194 pounds in 2006. He got mad and used that for energy to fuel his determination. He began to say NO to his “normal two Quarter-Pounders with Cheese with super-sized fries and super-sized Mountain Dew”(Hyson, 2006/2007).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Another interesting tip is to keep meal journals. It can be very enlightening to keep a meal journal. Nibblers eat more than we know by snacking just a little here and there. It can make a big difference, especially if it is high sugar or high fat snacks. Will guys hit on me all the time? Or I might fail, again. Face your fears and tell yourself you can handle them. Its easy to maintain the status quo, change is hard. You can do it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Forget the scale, eat healthy and exercise and the number on the scale will find you. Focus more on the way you live, what you eat and what you do rather than a number on the scale.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Face the facts, you have to eat. If you are an alcoholic or smoke, you can quit even though it may not be easy. But you can’t just quit eating all together. Food is addictive and you have to eat. But what you eat, is a choice.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We also are persuaded with images of people having a good time eating. You have to fight the social aspect of eating and remain true to yourself and eat to survive, not survive to eat.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You have to get the junk food out of the cabinet, but you also have to replace it with good food to eat. You are going to get hungry and you are going to want a snack. Instead of grabbing a cookie, get an apple. If you remove all the food so to speak, then you might binge or feel deprived. It’s not about any of these things, it’s what you eat.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When a routine snack time comes, you have to change what you normally do. Don’t take a break with the guys to get a drink and snack. Go for a walk – anything – just something different. If you are at home, play with the kids, dogs, or yard work. Change your routine snack time to distract your urge to snack.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You have to exercise. You don’t have to LIKE to exercise, but you have to exercise. Eating less can take you so far, but our bodies weren’t made to sit on the couch all the time. Make exercise a routine in your day just like taking a bath and going to work.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Change your reward system. If you are doing great, don’t get a cookie. Buy something. Set a goal. If money is tight, give yourself extra time to do something you enjoy (besides eating). You must have small goals to obtain and a reward system of anything other than food.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Do it for you. Don’t let others tell you that you need to be a size 6 to fit into society. Do it because you want to live longer, walk a flight of stairs without gasping for air, or just to look younger. Its about you, not your husband or parents or friends. To this day if I head for the washroom after a meal my mother feels the panic start to well up inside of her. Her first reaction to the news that her daughter was bulimic, like so many other mothers, was shock. This had been going on for 7 years and she never knew and she just couldn’t understand why.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Bulimia and Anorexia are eating disorders that affect girls primarily in their teens (but can start as young as 10 years old) to their early twenties. Although it is mostly girls that are affected approximately 10% are boys and this number continues to increase. Bulimia is the reoccurrence of binging and then purging. Binging is when a larger than normal amount of food is eaten in one sitting. It is like there is a total loss of control and a young girl can consume 3 times that of a grown man. Purging is when vomiting is self-induced after eating and often, excessive amounts of laxatives are used. Girls who are bulimic become very good at hiding it from everyone even their families, primarily by saving the binging and purging till alone. To people with bulimia their physical appearance has become the determining factor as to their worth as a person. The ability to binge and purge gives control to girls that have somewhere along the way lost it in their lives.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So as parents what should you look for? An abnormal occupation with weight, which will in turn lead to your daughter being preoccupied with dieting. With some bulimics there will not be a drastic weight loss, as with anorexia, however this is not always true. In the case of obesity it is unfortunately usually undetectable. I know that the clothes in my closet ranged in size from 5 to 12. If you have an 11 year old girl who says she needs to go on a diet, that is a good sign that there is trouble. Dieting can be the most dangerous enemy that your daughter ever faces.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If she decides to become a vegetarian but also gives up cake and cookie or eliminates dairy from her diet but also eliminates all high calorie foods; if she starts to constantly make excuses as to why she can’t eat, like she is running late or ate with a friend; if she also starts to withdraw and seems depressed a lot of the time and spends more and more time alone. These are all very strong signs of an eating disorder.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The one thing that parents need to realize is that this is not something that will just go away or that they’ll grow out of. It is a serious problem that can result in a variety of medical problems and even death. If you see some of these behaviors in your child, you need to seek professional help for her. If you start attacking your child they will become defensive and the situation can worsen. There is help available and treatments such as antidepressants are proving very successful. The first step is realizing there is a problem and then the most important step is getting help. This is when the term “yo yo dieting” comes into play. Even though a person may lose weight after beginning a diet, they will have to work hard to keep up and maintain the progress. Yo yo dieting is also seen in individuals who are obese.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Those who are obese have more fat cells than a person who is physically fit. Their fat cells are also larger. When an obese man or woman diets, their fat cells do not decrease in numbers, they only grow smaller. This means that when food intake increases after a diet, the fat cells will return to their original state, making the overall appearance of the individual larger. This is why it is important for a person to find a diet that they will be able to stick to; they will be able to feel better and maintain their weight loss better.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Although the trend of dieting has been mostly associated with women; men also experience these ups and downs of yo yo dieting. During short-term dieting, a dieter must exercise or else half or more of the weight they lose will be due to a loss in muscles. Muscle loss will lead to a variety of problems, such as a thinner, weaken body prone to breakdowns and fatigue; weakened maintenance of weight because it is muscle than burns calories, not fat; and when weight is gained back, it is mostly fat that will stick to the body- exercise is needed to build muscles.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Another result of yo yo dieting is when the weight is gained back, a dieter who does not exercise will not only be fatter, but will appear thicker than they were before. For example, let’s say a man weighed 300 pounds and wore a 5x shirt. He diets without exercising, then loses 20 pounds. Now, let’s say that he regains the weight, but now he is puzzled as to why he now has to fit into a size 6x shirt. The reason is that fat is lighter and less dense than muscle, so it takes more fat weight, as well as bulk, to replace the lost muscle weight. Exercise can eliminate some of these problems.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Not only is yo yo dieting a frustrating process, but it is not good for your overall health. When a person bounces from weight gain to weight loss and back to weight gain again, the immune system suffers. Studies have shown that negative health effects of yo-yo dieting can still be detected years after the fact. If a man participates in crash dieting, such as trying to lose ten pounds in ten days, they will most likely suffer from a yo yo dieting trend. If they are trying to maintain a healthy weight, they should choose a diet that promotes a healthy diet over longer periods of time. The diet should be a complete lifestyle change and not something to try for one brief moment.
